Probiotics: Follow Your Gut!
I wanted to do a quick product review this week about a new product that I’m loving. I’ve been obsessed with reading Hannah Bronfman’s book Do What Feels Good, it’s all about fitness, beauty, wellness, healthy eating, and recipes. One of the recipes she includes is for a probiotic coconut yogurt. Which I never knew existed, SO I was very excited for a few reasons:
- I’ve been looking for a new breakfast option
- I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to get probiotics that REALLY work.
- I LOVE coconut !!!
What Are Probiotics Anyway?
Probiotics are extremely good for our body because they provide our gut with good bacteria that is needed to aid our digestive system, immune system, and it also balances out the bad bacteria in our gut. Probiotics (good bacteria) is also very important when treating and preventing diseases. Probiotics can be found in foods that have been fermented such as kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, and YOGURT. I drink kombucha occasionally, but it can be very high in sugar (beware!) and I’m not interested in eating kimchi and sauerkraut everyday… Another option would be to take a probiotic supplement. But for me, yogurt seemed like exactly what I needed: it’s light, perfect for breakfast, and filled with healthy probiotics.
But here’s the issue, live probiotics are typically only found in dairy yogurt. So considering that I am vegan, I had to find an alternative that would work for me. So when I found the recipe for probiotic coconut yogurt in Hannah’s book I was SO excited to try it, BUT here’s the caveat it takes about 12-24 hours to make (fermentation takes time). And you guys know I’m all for making things from scratch, I still plan on making the recipe, but I really just wanted the option to buy one if I could. WELL GUESS WHAT, through some research I found the solution…
Good Bacteria TAKE OVER
GT’s Living Food makes a line of probiotic coconut yogurt called Cocoyo, that comes in a few different flavors: Original, Ginger Tumeric, and Vanilla. I bought the original and added, mixed berries, oats, and shredded coconut. I loved the strong rich flavor of the coconut and the fluffy texture. More importantly, after I ate it I INSTANTLY felt stomach cramping, gas, and inflammation. I know that sounds bad, but it’s GOOD, what that means is that it’s working. All of the bad bacteria was dying off due to all the good bacteria taking over. And because I haven’t been taking probiotics consistently, my system was detoxing all of that bad bacteria out of my body. So I KNOW it’s doing its job.
My only negative review is that because there is live probiotics in the yogurt itself, the texture is a bit gritty. Just imagine breaking a pill open and pouring the powder in the yogurt, that’s what it tastes like. But once you add all of your favorite yogurt toppings the grittiness just goes away.
**Cocoyo yogurt is a little bit on the pricier side ($5.00), but if you made it from scratch it would cost significantly less. So in this case it’s a time vs cost tradeoff.
